Basic Training Information for LPG
LPG or liquefied petroleum gas is a colourless and odourless fuel derived from natural gas. LPG contains 90 percent propane. It is extracted in a method called distilling.
Considerations
LPG gas must be handled with care to prevent possible fires and explosions which take place with the improper installation or maintenance of gas lines. LPG domestic appliances need correct installation and maintenance in order to avoid mishaps.
Prevention
Accident-prevention training is important for anybody working directly with liquid petroleum gas. Correct refueling methods and ways to check for leaks should be included in training. Training should also include knowing how to wear personal protective gear and being alert to dangers such as loose fittings or damaged hoses.
Emergency Preparation
Liquid petroleum gas could be a hazardous fuel, so employees should be familiar with emergency procedures in the event of explosions and fires. Training must include gas leak control, first aid and evacuation.
Fuel Storage
When storing tanks from the large refueling tank or a small fuel canister, one must secure a safe site away from buildings. Warnings of no smoking must be posted. To ensure tanks are only accessed by authorized employees, the tanks have to be locked in a secure enclosure which is designed to be protected from vehicle impact. Concrete bumpers or other retaining systems are great. The fueling station should have an accessible fire extinguisher. Just those trained to utilize the fueling station must be permitted to do so. Personnel also must be trained to utilize the fire extinguisher.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration states that anyone utilizing a lift truck must undergo a training program consisting of both in-class and practical, hands-on training. Trainees would be tested to ensure they know the safety problems associated in using a forklift.
